Mrs. T. Hellios, Career Consultant

The Career Center at Grant Community High School offers up to date information and materials
related to careers.  Mrs. Hellios meets one-on-one and in groups with students assisting and promoting career awareness and development.  Students are encouraged to make use of these resources. The Career Center is located in the Guidance Department and hours are Monday through Thursday, 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

 

Personality Assessments/Interest Testing:

Career assessments are short on-line interest tests or exams, with questions about your values and likes and the results are linked to careers.

Career Cruising is an on-line career and educational planning program.  Students can create their own personal account, and use the various career/educational components from school
or home.

 

Job Shadows:

Job shadows are available to Grant Community High School students at the Junior and Senior
level.   A job shadow is an opportunity for students to spend a day or part of a day observing and interviewing a professional in a specific career area. Students may participate in the job shadow programs if they meet the required criteria.

The job shadow experience helps students acquire a realistic impression of the job position.
Students also develop a more positive attitude about themselves and the world of work.
The knowledge gained from the job shadow allows students to make informed and practical
decisions about educational plans and goals.

Specific paperwork must be completed before students can participate in a job shadow.
Some job shadows require 500 word essays before participating.

Students may set-up their own job shadows on the outside of school but this is NOT a school
event.

 

Resume  Services: (Freshman thru Seniors)

Students may have a professional resume completed in the Career Center.  A resume can
be utilized for job hunting, scholarship applications and/or to distribute to educators for recommendation letters.   Stop by the Career Center to set-up an appointment.

Healthcare Field:

Centegra Hospital, McHenry (juniors and seniors)

Job shadow a professional in the medical field in the following careers:
nurse, physical therapist, medical imaging (x-ray), pharmacist, phlebotomist, emergency room,
surgery, orthopedic services, respiratory therapist, and sports medicine.

 

Rosalind Franklin University, North Chicago (medical tour),  (juniors and seniors)

Students interested in the medical career fields may tour the Rosalind Franklin University.
The college is broken down by the following departments: Chicago Medical School, College of
Health Professions, Dr. William M. Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine, College of Pharmacy,
and School of Graduate and Post Doctoral Studies.  Students interested in this medical tour with career interests in the following:

  • Doctor
  • Nurse
  • Physician Assistant
  • Podiatrist
  • Anesthesiologist
  • Pharmacist

 

Penwasciz – Advocate Condell Hospital, Libertyville: (juniors and seniors)

This program provides an early opportunity for junior and senior students to learn first hand
about health careers in an actual experience in a medical setting.  Students are competing with
other students in Lake County for a nine month program where students rotate to individual
medical departments, such as, emergency room, patient care units, clinical labs, radiology
department, pharmacy, physical therapy, respiratory department, etc.
Interviews are conducted to choose students who are selected for this program.  Students
attend an orientation program and donate two hours every week during the academic year.
Students apply on-line at the start of the school year.

Physical Therapy Job Shadow: (Juniors and Seniors)

Students interested in the career field of Physical Therapy may participate in a job shadow
with a Fox Lake “Physical Therapy” location (near Dominicks) in the shopping center in Fox Lake. 

 

Valley Lakes Veterinary Clinic, Round Lake: (Juniors and Seniors)

Students interested in the career field of Veterinarian or Vet Technician may participate in
a job shadow with the doctor on Wednesdays, 3:00 – 8:00 p.m.

 

Educational Job Shadow: (Junior and Senior students)

Students interested in becoming a teacher may participate in the job shadow at
Fox Lake Grade School (Stanton School and Lotus School).  Students may spend a day
with a pre-k through 8th grade teacher: including, physical education, speech pathology, art,
special education, music).  A 500 word essay is required explaining “Why you want to be a
teacher and what you expect to gain from the job shadow”.

 

Law Enforcement:  (Freshman thru Seniors)

 

Fox Lake Police Explorers:

Students interested in the career field of law enforcement may join the Fox Lake Police Explorers, a national program for individuals (14-20 years old) who have an interest in law enforcement.  The Explorers meet weekly every Wednesday at the old Lion’s Club building in Fox Lake from 7-9 p.m.  Lieutenant Charles Gliniewicz is the contact person (847) 587-3961.
Students interested in the career fields of policeman, FBI, Homeland Security, Lawyer, Judge, etc.  This program is a hands on training and work in conjunction with the community.  Students also participate in state and national competitions.

 

Fire and Emergency Services: (Freshman thru Seniors)

 

Fox Lake Fire Department Explorer Post 2200

Fox Lake Fire Dept. Explorers is a national program for students ages 14-20 years old.  All Fox Lake Fire Dept. Explorers receive class room instruction with hands on training.  The training consists of both firefighting skills and emergency medical training.  A ride-along program enables each explorer first hand knowledge of the fire services.  Explorers meet every Thursday, 7 p.m. at the Fox Lake Fire Department, Station 2, 306 Washington Street, Ingleside.  The contact person is Katie Neulist (847) 587-3312. Students interested in the career field of firefighter, paramedics, emergency medical technician may join and gain insight and practical experience in the fire service career.
 

Trade Associations: (Juniors and Seniors)

In apprenticeship training – “You Earn While Your Learn.”  Most trade associations are
taught a skill and receive on the job training at the same time.  When you complete the
apprenticeship you are called a “Journeyman”.  Representatives from the Electrical Union,
Plumbers Union, and the Carpenters Union visit Grant H.S.  Students are invited to attend
these meetings to assist them in deciding a program of interest.

Culinary Field Trip: (Juniors and Seniors)

Kendall College, Chicago

Students interested in the career field of culinary chef, pastry chef or hospitality management may participate in this field trip.

 

Cosmetology Field Trip: (Juniors and Seniors)

Students interested in the career field  of cosmetology may visit the Arlington Academy of
Cosmetology, Buffalo Grove.

 

Massage Therapy: (Juniors and Seniors)

Cortiva Institute, Crystal Lake

Students interested in the career field of Massage Therapy may attend a tour of their
facility.

 

Fashion Design: (Juniors and Seniors)

Harper College, Palatine

Students interested in the interior design, fashion design or merchandise design career fields
can attend a Fashion Show and tour of the above departments at Harper College.                

 

Argonne National Laboratories, Argonne, Illinois: (Juniors and Seniors)
(one of the U.S. Dept. of Energy’s largest national laboratories for science and engineering research).

A conference for girls (six students) who are interested in pursuing a career in Science and
Technology. Speakers and panelists will come from a variety of scientific and engineering disciplines.

 

Automotive Careers: (Juniors and Seniors)

Universal Technical Institute, Glendale Heights, IL

Universal Technical Institute (UTI) a field trip is scheduled in the spring. UTI offers training in automotive, diesel, marine, NASCAR, and motorcycle training and certification.

 

Speakers:

Various speakers from several professions visit Grant H.S. throughout the year.
These speakers share their knowledge and expertise about their careers including:

  • First hand information about a specific career
  • Informed and realistic decisions about the future
  • Positive attitudes about themselves and the world of work
  • Resource information about careers

Dates and times for speakers are posted in the daily announcements and  on posters.
Students may obtain passes in the Career Center. Speaker topics include:

Lake County Technology Campus:

Students interested in touring the Lake County Technology Campus in Grayslake may sign up
in the Career Center.  By touring the facility, students can gain a better understanding of the program they wish to enroll in.  Students may sign up in the Career Center for these tours.
